The Sitka Brown Bear is a descendant of polar bears who were trapped on Baranof island when the ice melted. They mixed with mainland grizzly bears and are killed by humans as they snack on trash left out along on their annual migration path to feed on salmon at the mouth of the Indian River. Cloud berries are replaced by McFlurries.

Seventy-five years ago my grandfather was a commercial fisherman in Alaska right before the adoption of nylon fishing nets. These nets were recently banned in efforts to save the King Salmon population from extinction. I followed his footsteps up to Sitka and spoke with local fisherman about the ecological and economic crisis that has been accumulating for decades. These paintings reflect the environmental enormity of warming waters and drifting non-decompostible ghost nets that continue catching fish long after they are lost in the ocean.
